What is `Ubizo` - The Calling?

Ukuthwasa is the sacred and often challenging journey one undertakes when they receive `ubizo`—a spiritual calling from their ancestors to become a healer (`sangoma` or `inyanga`). This is not a career choice; it is a destiny chosen for you by your ancestral lineage. The calling often manifests as a series of disruptions in one's life, which can be confusing and frightening if not understood correctly.

These disruptions are not a punishment. They are your ancestors' way of getting your attention, of showing you that your path lies in service to the spiritual world. My role as a Gobela is to help you interpret these signs and guide you through the initiation process with wisdom and integrity.

Common Signs of the Calling

Unexplained Illnesses

Persistent physical or mental health issues that doctors cannot diagnose or treat effectively.

Prophetic & Disturbing Dreams

Vivid, recurring dreams of ancestors, snakes, water, lions, or being in traditional ceremonies.

Social Withdrawal & Isolation

A sudden desire to be alone, feeling misunderstood, and withdrawing from friends and family.

General Misfortune

Your life seems to fall apart—losing jobs, failing relationships, and constant bad luck.

Hearing Voices or Seeing Things

Experiencing auditory or visual phenomena that others do not, which are often messages from spirits.

A Deep Pull Towards Spirituality

A sudden, intense interest in traditional healing, ancestors, and the spiritual world.

"My life was in chaos. I was sick, depressed, and losing everything. Gobela Inyanga helped me understand it was `ubizo`. The initiation was hard, but I am now a healer myself and have found my true purpose. I am finally at peace."

- Thokozani Gogo, Mpumalanga

The Path of Initiation

1

Confirming the Calling

The first step is a divination to confirm that your struggles are indeed from `ubizo` and to identify which ancestral spirit is calling you.

2

The Initiation (`iThongo`)

If you accept the call, you become an initiate (`ithwasa`). This is a period of intense training where you learn to connect with your ancestors, interpret dreams, use herbs, and master divination.

3

Graduation & Service

After your training is complete, a graduation ceremony is held. You emerge as a new healer, ready to serve your community and honor your ancestors through your practice.

Prayer for the Calling

"Ancestors who call, I hear you. Guide my steps on this sacred path. Open my eyes to see and my ears to hear. Grant me the strength to heal myself so I may heal others. Let your light shine through me. Thokozani."

This prayer honors the sacred journey of Ukuthwasa and the acceptance of your spiritual destiny.

My Role as Your Gobela

As a Gobela (a trainer of healers), my role is to be your guide, protector, and teacher throughout this sacred journey. I ensure your training is authentic, ethical, and in accordance with the wishes of your ancestors. I provide a safe space for you to die to your old self and be reborn as the healer you were destined to be.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I ignore the calling?

Ignoring `ubizo` often leads to more chaos and suffering. The ancestral spirits will become more insistent, and the disruptions in your life may worsen until you acknowledge your path.

How long does the initiation process take?

The duration of Ukuthwasa is determined by your ancestors, not by any person. It can range from several months to a few years. The spirits decide when you are ready.

Can I still have a normal life and job?

The initiation period is very demanding and often requires you to step away from your normal life. After graduation, many healers successfully integrate their spiritual practice with a modern lifestyle and career.

Is the process expensive?

Ukuthwasa involves costs for ceremonies, offerings, and the Gobela's time and resources. However, a true Gobela understands that this is a spiritual matter, and arrangements can often be made to accommodate the initiate's circumstances.
